Heading South: Your New Life in Ticino Awaits
The Ticino is, for many German-speaking Swiss, the epitome of quality of life. Palm trees, Lake Maggiore, espresso on the piazza and a mild climate attract retirees, emigrants and sun-seekers alike. A move to Ticino is often the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream.
But between the dream and reality lies a formidable obstacle: the Alps.
A move from Zurich, Bern or Basel to Lugano, Locarno or Ascona is no ordinary change of home. It is a logistical expedition. The Gotthard traffic jams, distances often exceeding 200 kilometres and the sometimes narrow, winding lanes of Ticino villages call for a partner who can not only carry boxes but also manage complex projects.
Swiss Umzüge is your bridge to the south. We bring your belongings safely over (or through) the mountain – so that you can look forward wholeheartedly to the "Dolce Vita".
The Challenge: Long-Distance Moves Across the Alps
Why is a move to Ticino different from a move within Zurich?
- Distance and the time factor: A lorry journey from Zurich to Lugano takes a good 3 to 4 hours – without traffic. There and back, a working day is often used up by the drive alone. We plan our routes so efficiently that idle time is avoided and your costs stay within reasonable limits.
- The Gotthard: It is Switzerland's bottleneck. Our dispatchers monitor traffic conditions at the Gotthard and on the San Bernardino route meticulously. We know at what times we need to drive to avoid waiting for hours in traffic jams.
- Packing is king: On a 5-kilometre journey, a box will "forgive" minor packing mistakes. Over 250 kilometres of motorway, bends and tunnel vibrations, everything must be perfectly padded. Our professionals pack your belongings "Alps-proof".
Ticino Special: From Villa to Rustico
Ticino has architectural peculiarities that are a real test for removal companies. We know them all.
Moving into a Rustico (Stone House)
Many of our customers move into a charming rustico in the Maggia Valley or Verzasca Valley.
- The problem: These houses are often located on steep slopes or in lanes that are far too narrow for normal removal vans.
- Our solution: We work with a shuttle system. We park the large lorry in the valley or on a main square and transport your furniture the last few metres to the house using small, manoeuvrable vans (shuttles) or external lifts.
Moving to City Centres (Lugano / Locarno)
Strict access rules apply in the pedestrian zones of Lugano and on the lakeside promenade in Ascona. We obtain the necessary permits from the local Polizia Comunale in advance so that we can load and unload legally.

2. Part-Load Transport (Furniture Transport) for Holiday Homes
Do you have a holiday home in Ticino and only want to transport a single sofa, a dining table or a few boxes there?
A whole lorry would be too expensive for that. Use our part-load service. We combine your transport with other trips to Ticino. This saves you up to 50% of the cost, as you share the journey.
3. End-of-Tenancy Cleaning at Your Old Home
Are you already dreaming of gelato by the lake, but your old apartment in German-speaking Switzerland still needs to be handed over?
No problem. Our cleaning team takes care of the end-of-tenancy cleaning with a handover guarantee at your old home (e.g. Zurich, Aargau, Lucerne). You drive to Ticino at your leisure while we clean and hand the apartment over to the property management.
Cost Factors: How Much Does a Move to Ticino Cost?
A long-distance move is more expensive than a local move. Prices are made up as follows:
| Factor | Explanation | Money-saving tip |
| Staff time | Travel time (there & back) counts as working time. | Preparation is everything: the better things are packed, the faster the loading. |
| Lorry hire & mileage | Diesel and vehicle wear over hundreds of kilometres. | Use part-load transport for small quantities! |
| Tolls & fees | LSVA (performance-related heavy vehicle fee) in Switzerland. | There is no leeway here – it is the law. |
| Logistics on site | Use of a furniture lift or shuttle vehicles. | Precise information about access helps us calculate correctly. |
Fairness guarantee: As traffic jams at the Gotthard are a matter of force majeure, we try to take this into account fairly in our fixed-price offers. Get a fixed-price quote, so that you can plan your budget with certainty.
Checklist: Moving from North to South
The switch from the German-speaking to the Italian-speaking region also brings administrative changes.
- 3 months before: Give notice on your apartment in German-speaking Switzerland.
- 2 months before: Sort things out! Do you really need the lawnmower in your apartment in Lugano?
- 6 weeks before: Contact Swiss Umzüge. For long-distance moves, we need lead time for planning.
- 1 month before: Sort out your internet and telephone provider (check coverage in Ticino).
- Registration: Find out about the "Ufficio Controllo Abitanti" (residents' registration office) of your new municipality in Ticino.
Language barrier? Not with us.
"Parla Italiano?" – Don't worry.
Many of our customers do not speak Italian (yet). Even though we are a company from German-speaking Switzerland, we know the customs in Ticino. We know how to communicate with local authorities and caretakers to make your move run smoothly.
For the administrative steps (registration, taxes), we recommend the official portal Anyone who is also changing their registered address as part of the move can find the necessary steps on the official portal, which provides all information in German too, even when it concerns the canton of Ticino.

Frequently asked questions
Do you also drive at weekends?
Yes, but please note the Sunday driving ban for lorries in Switzerland. Saturdays are very popular moving days. For transport to Ticino, we often recommend using Friday for loading and the journey, so that you have the weekend to settle in.
What happens if it snows at the Gotthard?
The Gotthard road tunnel is open all year round, but the approach roads can be wintry. Our vehicles are well maintained and winter-ready. In extreme weather conditions, we consult with you. Safety comes first.
Can you also transport my car to Ticino?
We concentrate on furniture. However, if you do not want to drive yourself, we can recommend partner companies for vehicle transport, or one of our drivers can transfer your car (on request).
Do you also carry out moves FROM Ticino to German-speaking Switzerland?
Of course. We drive the route regularly in both directions. If you are moving from Bellinzona back to Bern ("returning north"), we are your partner just the same.
