Getting to know the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden
Moving to Appenzell Ausserrhoden: removals in 20 municipalities
Together with Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden is completely surrounded by the canton of St. Gallen. As of 30 September 2025 the canton had 57,051 inhabitants. Unlike in the neighbouring canton, its population density of 235 inhabitants per square kilometre is even slightly above the Swiss average of 221. Government and parliament sit in Herisau, while the courts are based in Trogen. The highest mountain is the Säntis at 2502 m above sea level, where the borders of both Appenzells and St. Gallen meet. A curiosity: the geographical centre of the canton lies outside it, in Innerrhoden.
Hinterland, Mittelland, Vorderland
The three districts were officially abolished in 1995, but in everyday life they live on as regions, for example in the names of clubs and at the civil registry offices. When planning your removal in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, this division is a useful guide:
- Hinterland with Herisau, Hundwil, Schönengrund, Schwellbrunn, Stein, Urnäsch and Waldstatt
- Mittelland with Bühler, Gais, Speicher, Teufen and Trogen
- Vorderland with Heiden, Grub, Lutzenberg, Rehetobel, Reute, Wald, Walzenhausen and Wolfhalden
The current structure of 20 Einwohnergemeinden (municipalities) has existed since 1749, when Stein split off from Hundwil. Each municipality organises its own affairs independently. So whether you need a parking reservation for moving day is something we check for each address, and we arrange it for you.
A canton without a motorway
There are no motorways on Ausserrhoden territory. The cantonal road network covers 227 kilometres, of which only six kilometres are expressways; the rest are main, regional and local connecting roads. For your removals company this means that the last few kilometres to many addresses run along cantonal and municipal roads, where not every vehicle makes equally good progress.
That is why we clarify vehicle size, stopping place and carrying distance during the free survey, either on site or by WhatsApp video. If the flat is on an upper floor with a narrow staircase, we check whether a furniture lift is the better solution.
Narrow gauge, rack railway and PostBus
SBB does not operate in the canton. Instead, since 2006 the Appenzeller Bahnen have been running services on a network made up mostly of narrow-gauge lines, some with rack sections. A special feature is the Rorschach-Heiden-Bergbahn, one of the very few standard-gauge rack railways in the world. In addition there are 21 PostBus lines and five Regiobus lines, some of which also serve Appenzell Innerrhoden and the canton of St. Gallen.
Parts of the canton now belong to the St. Gallen agglomeration. If you are moving here from Zurich and work in the city of St. Gallen, you may want to factor proximity to the railway into your choice of flat. On request we schedule your move on a Saturday, with no Saturday surcharge.
Protestant heritage, with its own dialect
Since the division of the land in 1597, Ausserrhoden has been shaped by the Protestant Reformed church, whereas Innerrhoden is Catholic. The official language is German; Appenzell German belongs to the Eastern Swiss dialects and varies from place to place, most markedly in the Kurzenberg dialect. From the 16th century onwards, large textile houses grew up in several municipalities, but the industry declined between 1920 and 1939.
Today the canton, with its focus on Herisau and Teufen, is known for naturopaths and manufacturers of natural remedies.
