Deadlines after moving in the Canton of Vaud
Anyone moving in the Canton of Vaud registers the move with the municipality. A separate deadline applies to vehicles.
What applies in the Canton of Vaud
- Municipality: Registration with the new municipality within 8 days of the move, in person at the counter (Canton of Vaud).
- Online: via eUmzug only in some municipalities; both the old and the new municipality must take part.
- Vehicle: Report changes to the vehicle registration document, such as the new address, to the road traffic office within 14 days; if you move from another canton, you receive new number plates.
- Parkplatz in Lausanne: Reservation for the move with the Service de la mobilité, signage at least 7 working days in advance.
- Post: Set up mail forwarding at least 4 working days before your move.

Removals to Vaud: how distance and terrain shape the price
Vaud stretches from the Jura across the Mittelland into the Alps, with almost 2,900 metres of altitude between Lake Geneva and the Diablerets. A flat in Lausanne mainly needs a good parking spot, whereas a chalet in the Alps calls for checks on the access road and carrying distance. The distance to French-speaking Switzerland matters, because the journey there and back from Wallisellen counts as working time. A cost ceiling is available on request.

Getting to know Vaud
Zügeln to Vaud: moving to Switzerland's third-largest canton
Zügeln is Swiss German for moving house. By population and economic output, Vaud is the third-largest canton after Zurich and Bern, and the fourth-largest by area. 859,186 people live here (as of 30 September 2025). The official and everyday language is French: in the 2000 census, 81.83 per cent named French as the language they speak best, and 4.75 per cent German.
Jura, Mittelland and Alps in one canton
Apart from Bern, Vaud is the only canton that extends into all three major regions of Switzerland: the Jura occupies the north-west, the Alps the south-east, and in between lies the Mittelland (Swiss plateau) with rolling hills and fertile valleys. Between Lake Geneva at 372 m above sea level and the Sommet des Diablerets at 3,210 m there is a difference in altitude of almost 2,900 metres. Lakes cover around 12 per cent of the canton, including Lake Geneva in the south, the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel and the Lac de Joux in the Jura.
A move here may involve a flat on the lakeside promenade, a house in the Jura or a chalet in the Alps. That is why we determine vehicle size, parking spot and carrying distance during the free on-site survey; where access is tight, we use a furniture lift.
Urban areas on the lake and in the north
Most of the population lives in urban agglomerations:
- Lausanne with its neighbouring municipalities: around 324,400 inhabitants
- Vevey and Montreux on the Vaud Riviera: 89,900
- Aigle region: 37,100
- Yverdon-les-Bains on Lake Neuchâtel: 31,600
Nyon looks more towards Geneva; other important towns are Morges, Renens and Rolle. A special case is the district of Avenches, an exclave entirely surrounded by the canton of Fribourg; conversely, three Fribourg enclaves lie within Vaud.
Lausanne rail hub and the first motorway
Switzerland's first motorway was the Geneva–Lausanne route, today's A1. Lausanne station is a hub for regional, national and international services, and since 2008 the Métro M2 has run as a fully automated underground system. Lausanne, Montreux, Vevey, Nyon, Morges, Yverdon-les-Bains and Aigle have dense bus and trolleybus networks. Many commuters do without a car: in 2025 there were 511.1 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants.
Vaud is also home to the headquarters of companies such as Logitech, Nestlé, Philip Morris International and Kudelski. For businesses, we plan the move outside working hours.
For tourism, the canton is divided into four regions: «Cities – Lakes», «Jura», «Countryside» and «Alps». With Lavey and Yverdon-les-Bains it has two thermal spas, and CGN boats sail on Lake Geneva as far as French towns such as Évian-les-Bains.
From German-speaking Switzerland to Lake Geneva
From 1536 to 1798 Vaud was a subject territory of Bern, and since 1803 it has been a canton in its own right. Today, a move from Zurich to Vaud is also a change to French-speaking Switzerland. Especially with the long journey to Lake Geneva, both give you planning certainty, and they are agreed after the survey.
How do you plan a move to the Lac de Joux in the Vaud Jura?

Where are my belongings kept if the flat in Vaud is not ready to move into yet?
Before the move to Vaud, they can go into our furniture storage, which is dry, climate-controlled and fitted with an alarm. This lets you hand back your Zurich flat on time, even if your new home in Vevey, Morges or Yverdon-les-Bains is not yet free. As soon as the move-in date is fixed, we bring everything to Romandy and assemble the furniture.
What should I do myself before moving day to French-speaking Switzerland?
Important documents, jewellery and medication are best packed in your own luggage, along with charging cables and everything for the first night. Empty wardrobes and chests of drawers, defrost the fridge the day before and label the boxes with the destination room. That way we can load without interruption on moving day.
Why do Vaud rules apply in Avenches even though it is surrounded by the canton of Fribourg?
Because the district of Avenches belongs to Vaud as an exclave. Registration, vehicle registration document and number plates therefore follow Vaud requirements, even if you travel to Fribourg every day for shopping and work. For us, the route simply passes through Fribourg territory, and we apply for the parking spot with the local municipality.
What precautions protect glass and electronics on the way to Lake Geneva?
We pack mirrors, pictures and glass panels individually with protective material, and televisions and computers in padded covers or their own boxes. In the vehicle all items are strapped down so that nothing shifts on the long motorway journey. Insurance is already included in our prices; no separate policy is needed.

Lausanne and neighbouring municipalities
Around 324,400 people live in this agglomeration. In the city we secure the parking spot early; in the upper part of town, where a road tunnel cuts through the rock, we also check gradient and access.
Vevey, Montreux and Lavaux
Between Lausanne and Montreux, the Vaud Riviera extends with Lavaux. On the slopes above the lake we clarify vehicle size and carrying distance; in the lakeside towns, mainly the parking space in front of the building.
Yverdon-les-Bains on Lake Neuchâtel
Yverdon-les-Bains and its agglomeration lie on the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel. The lakeside location is flat, so the focus is on parking, lift dimensions and floor level, which we record precisely for the quote.
Aigle region and the Vaud Alps

Important documents, jewellery and medication are best packed in your own luggage, along with charging cables and everything for the first night. Empty wardrobes and chests of drawers, defrost the fridge the day before and label the boxes with the destination room. That way we can load without interruption on moving day.

Because the district of Avenches belongs to Vaud as an exclave. Registration, vehicle registration document and number plates therefore follow Vaud requirements, even if you travel to Fribourg every day for shopping and work. For us, the route simply passes through Fribourg territory, and we apply for the parking spot with the local municipality.
What precautions protect glass and electronics on the way to Lake Geneva?
We pack mirrors, pictures and glass panels individually with protective material, and televisions and computers in padded covers or their own boxes. In the vehicle all items are strapped down so that nothing shifts on the long motorway journey. Insurance is already included in our prices; no separate policy is needed.
