Anyone moving in the Canton of Ticino reports the move to the municipality. A separate deadline applies to vehicles.
What applies in the Canton of Ticino
- Municipality: Registration with the residents' registration office (Ufficio controllo abitanti) of the new municipality – usually within 14 days (ch.ch).
- Online: via eTrasloco only between participating municipalities.
- Vehicle: Report changes to the vehicle registration document, such as the new address, to the road traffic office within 14 days; if you move from another canton, you receive new number plates.

Getting to know the canton of Ticino
Removals to Ticino: to the southern side of the Alps and a different language region
Ticino lies on the southern side of the Alps and is largely surrounded by Italy; to the north it borders Valais, Uri and Graubünden. The capital is Bellinzona, the most populous city is Lugano, and the southernmost point of Switzerland lies near Chiasso. At 2812 km², the canton covers 7 per cent of the country's area, about a third of it forested. Thanks to its sweet chestnut forests, palm trees and cypresses, the canton is known as the «sun parlour of Switzerland», and Campione d’Italia is an enclave within cantonal territory. 359,390 people live here (as of 30 September 2025).
Italian, Lombard and a Walser village
The official language is Italian; 87.7 per cent name it as their main language and 10.8 per cent German. The Lombard dialect, «Ticinés», is also widespread: according to the 2000 census, 40 per cent spoke both Lombard and standard Italian in everyday life – «heart», for instance, is «cör» in dialect, similar to French. One exception is the Walser municipality of Bosco/Gurin, where Walser German is the traditional language.

From the Nufenen to Lake Maggiore
The river Ticino, which gives the canton its name, rises at the Nufenen Pass, flows through the Bedretto valley and the Leventina and, from Bellinzona, runs through the Magadino plain into Lake Maggiore. Monte Ceneri divides the canton into two parts:
- Sopraceneri: the north with the Leventina, Blenio valley, Maggia and Verzasca valleys, which drain into Lake Maggiore
- Sottoceneri: the south around Lake Lugano down to the Mendrisiotto
Between the Rheinwaldhorn (3402 m above sea level) and the shore of Lake Maggiore at 193 m above sea level, the lowest point in Switzerland, there is a difference of more than 3000 metres. In the mid-19th century a third of the population lived in villages above 600 m; today it is 7 per cent. Whether a city flat by the lake or a house in a mountain valley: we clarify stopping place, carrying distance and vehicle size during the free survey, with a furniture lift if needed.
The route through the Gotthard
For a long time the canton struggled against its isolation, as the pass roads were closed in winter due to the weather. Only the Gotthard rail tunnel of 1882 brought a year-round connection to the rest of Switzerland. It was followed in 1967 by the San Bernardino road tunnel in the neighbouring canton of Graubünden and in 1980 by the Gotthard road tunnel. Since 2016 the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel has linked Zurich and Milan.

Between Lake Maggiore at 193 m and the villages of the Leventina or the Blenio valley, access roads and paths vary greatly. If you are coming from German-speaking Switzerland, we set the route, vehicle and stopping place for each address.
Lugano on Lake Lugano
Lugano is the canton's most populous city. In urban locations by the lake we clarify early on where the removal truck can stop, and reserve the space before we set off from the Zurich area.
Bellinzona and the Magadino plain
The capital lies where the river Ticino flows west through the Magadino plain to Lake Maggiore. On the route via the Leventina, Bellinzona is the first larger stop, and addresses on the flat plain are easy to reach.
Leventina, Blenio, Maggia and Verzasca valleys
Today only 7 per cent of the population live in villages above 600 m. If you are moving to one of these mountain villages, you get a plan with a suitable vehicle size, a checked carrying route and, if needed, a furniture lift.
Mendrisiotto down to Chiasso
Chiasso lies in the southernmost tip of Switzerland on the border with Italy. For the journey to this part of the canton we factor in the extra distance over Monte Ceneri and plan departure and arrival accordingly.
Parking reservation
Ticino's municipalities (comuni) are autonomous and handle local matters themselves. Whether a reservation on public ground is needed for your address is something we clarify with the responsible office in your municipality, and we apply for it; the authority charges the fee.
Disposal
Anything that is not coming over the Gotthard with you we dispose of properly when you move out, for CHF 65.– per m³. For small quantities of glass, paper or aluminium, contact the collection point of your comune at your new place of residence.
