Obwalden lies in the Sarneraatal, a valley that begins at Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) in the north and ends at the Brünig Pass in the south, which leads over into the Bernese Oberland. With 39,701 inhabitants (as of 30 September 2025) and 81 people per square kilometre, the canton is sparsely populated. Alongside Nidwalden, Obwalden is the only canton completely surrounded by other inland cantons – Bern, Lucerne, Nidwalden and Uri.
The lowest point, at 434 m above sea level, is on Lake Lucerne; the highest is the Titlis at 3238 m. Most of the area belongs to the Unterwalden Prealps. Besides the Alpnachersee, a side arm of Lake Lucerne, five other larger lakes shape the canton:
Even the geographical centre of Switzerland is here, on the Älggi-Alp above the Kleines Melchtal on Sachseln territory. For a removal, the terrain means this: on the valley floor it is about parking space and carrying distance, on the slopes and in the Melchtal more about access and vehicle size. The municipality of Engelberg is cut off from the rest of the canton by Nidwalden, making it an exclave. The high valley only joined Obwalden in 1815, and its dialect differs markedly from that of the Sarnen valley. A move from Sarnen to Engelberg therefore passes through another canton – served by the Luzern-Stans-Engelberg railway and the road through Nidwalden. In the village itself, six bus lines run in winter and one in summer.
Within the old part of the canton there are also two dialect areas: the upper Sarnen valley with Lungern, Giswil and Sachseln, and the lower one with Sarnen, Alpnach and Kerns. Since the 1960s, construction has increased the housing supply, and people keep moving in from elsewhere at an undiminished rate.
Obwalden is not purely a holiday canton. For tourism there are the ski areas Engelberg-Titlis, Melchsee-Frutt, Brunni and Mörlialp.
