Moving in Elgg: what we pay attention to
Elgg has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in the canton of Zurich – the four lanes Vordergasse, Obergasse, Hintergasse and Untergasse still shape the town centre today. That is exactly what makes a move here demanding: in 2024 the municipality itself officially identified traffic routing and parking management in the old town as unresolved issues in its "Leitbild Altstadt Elgg" (old town development plan). Anyone moving here needs a partner who knows the access to the Obertor area and the narrow lanes, rather than discovering them on moving day.
Outside the old town, Elgg is directly connected to Winterthur and towards Thurgau via main road 7, plus the station on the S35 line. The formerly independent village of Hofstetten with its hamlets such as Dickbuch has also been part of Elgg since 2018 – here some access roads are rural and not all are served by public transport. For stopping and parking permits on moving day, we coordinate early with the Elgg municipal administration.

Getting to know Elgg
Moving company Elgg: removals in a historic country town
Elgg is one of the six historic country towns of the canton of Zurich. Duke Leopold III of Habsburg granted it town rights in 1371, and Schloss Elgg still towers above the town today; the castle goes back to a 12th-century fortress and has been owned by the Werdmüller family as an entailed estate since 1715. Anyone moving into or out of this setting needs movers in Elgg who factor the peculiarities of an old town into their planning.
Rebuilt after the fire of 1876
In 1876 a great fire destroyed half the town, including 42 houses and 47 farm buildings. The town was subsequently rebuilt. Today half-timbered houses line the four main lanes, and the late Gothic Reformed church with its important wall paintings, renovated in 2003/2004, also stands in the village centre. In an old wine press on the Humberg, a museum shows the crafts that had a tradition in the town, such as comb making and pewter casting.

Market days and events in the calendar
Around Lindenplatz, not every day is the same. A few dates are worth keeping in mind when choosing your moving date:
- From April to early December, every Saturday is market day with fresh produce from Elgg and the surrounding area.
- The Klausmarkt takes place on the Friday before 6 December.
- On Ash Wednesday, during the «Äschli» custom, a procession of boys in historical costumes passes through the town.
- The traditional «Waldumgang» (forest walk) follows at the beginning of summer.
