Getting to know the canton of Lucerne
Moving house in the canton of Lucerne: hill country with eight lakes
The canton of Lucerne spans the Swiss Plateau, the Pre-Alps and the Alps. Most of it belongs to the Plateau, yet it is not a flat plain but rolling hills with valley floors. With 440,866 inhabitants (as of 30 September 2025) and 295 people per square kilometre, it is more densely populated than the Swiss average. A move here can mean anything from a city neighbourhood to a remote farmhouse.
Landscapes with their own character
Typical regions are the Luzerner Hinterland in the north-west, the Entlebuch and the Gäu around Lake Sempach. It turns alpine in the south and east with Pilatus, Rigi and the Brienzer Rothorn, which at 2349.7 m above sea level is the highest point. The lowest point is the Reuss near Honau at 403.1 m above sea level.

Lucerne German with neighbouring accents
The official language is German; in 2012, 90.4 per cent of the population named German as their main language. The dialects differ noticeably: the Entlebuch leans towards Bernese German, Schongau points towards the Freiamt in Aargau, and the Rigi municipalities of Greppen, Weggis and Vitznau speak a dialect classed as Schwyz German. Moving within the canton can therefore mean moving into a completely different dialect area.
The structure of the canton has changed too. Until 2003 it consisted of 107 municipalities; after mergers there are around 80 today. The 2007 constitution no longer recognises the former five Ämter (districts); for the courts there are the four districts of Luzern, Kriens, Hochdorf and Willisau. The Willisau court district, for instance, covers the constituencies of Entlebuch, Sursee and Willisau and thus a large part of the rural half of the canton.
Farms, businesses and commuters
On 27 April 2016 the population passed the 400,000 mark for the first time; today it grows mainly through immigration.
