Whether it is the flat valley floor in Glarus Nord or a village in the Sernftal, this sequence shows how we prepare and carry out your move in the canton of Glarus.
You tell us where you are moving from and to, for example Näfels and Schwanden. We then look at the rooms and access, on site or by video, and send the quote.
Depending on the address, Glarus Nord, Glarus or Glarus Süd is responsible. We submit the application there for the space in front of the house and coordinate the date.
For villages in the Sernftal or on the Kerenzerberg we choose the lorry size by road width and turning space, so that nobody has to reload on moving day.
Boxes, tape and padding arrive at your home in good time. That way you can clear the cellar, attic and cupboards without rushing before moving day.
Before the first item is moved, we cover floors and pad the stairwell and lift car, in a block of flats in Netstal just as in a farmhouse in Elm.
Where stairs are too narrow or a balcony offers the shorter route, we use a furniture lift; we decide this at the survey.
The load is secured and insured. In winter we build in extra time for destinations far up the valley, so that the lorry arrives at the new address on time.
Our own carpenters reassemble beds, wardrobes and tables and place each piece in the room shown on the floor plan.
On request we clean your previous flat and attend the handover inspection. We then collect the empty boxes and close the job as quoted.
The canton of Glarus consists of just three municipalities: Glarus Nord, Glarus and Glarus Süd. The Glarus region is easy to reach from Lake Zurich – in Glarus Süd, we clarify access and routes during the survey.
Changes of address – moving in, within or away – must be reported to the residents' services within 14 days, via eUmzug, provided both the old and new municipality participate. The Glarus road traffic office also requires changes of address within 14 days.
In the canton of Glarus, a deadline of 14 days applies to both the residents' services and the road traffic office.

Glarus lies in the Linth valley between Lake Walen and the Klausen Pass and since 2011 has been divided into just three municipalities: Glarus, Glarus Nord and Glarus Süd.

At 685 square kilometres, the canton of Glarus roughly matches the catchment area of the Linth. It covers the valley down to the Walensee, the Linth plain west of the river as far as Bilten, and the Kerenzerberg. As of 30 September 2025, 42,482 people lived here; at 62 inhabitants per square kilometre, it is far less densely populated than the Swiss average. For removals in Glarus this means that almost every route runs through the same valley.
Large differences in altitude shape the Glarnerland. From the flat valley floor at 414 metres, the terrain rises to the Tödi at 3612 metres above sea level. Within a few kilometres the climate changes from mild on the Walensee to high-alpine on the glaciated peaks. The valley only opens to the north towards the Linth plain; the Sernftal, also called Kleintal, is the only side valley with village settlements.
The further up the valley your new address lies, the more planning matters. During the survey we clarify vehicle size, parking space and carrying distance, and decide together whether a furniture lift makes sense.
The Glarnerland is closely linked to the Zurich area. Every hour the S25 of the Zurich S-Bahn runs from Zürich HB via Wädenswil and Pfäffikon SZ to Glarus and Linthal. Together with the S6 Rapperswil–Ziegelbrücke–Glarus–Schwanden, this gives a half-hourly service between Ziegelbrücke and Schwanden. The Z-Pass lets you combine travel passes of the Ostwind fare network with the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund.
By road, the A3 runs partly and the Autostrasse 17 entirely within the canton; the main axis in the valley is the Hauptstrasse 17 along the Linth. For commuter households moving from Zurich to the Glarnerland, we can schedule moving day on a Saturday on request, with no Saturday surcharge.
The Linth correction began in 1807 as Switzerland's first national public works project. Since then the Linth has been diverted into the Walensee and its course to Lake Zurich canalised; before that it turned the Linth plain into marshland. The Linthwerk still shapes the whole region today.
Glarus borders the canton of St. Gallen to the north and east, Graubünden to the south, Uri to the south-west and Schwyz to the west. We plan moves across the cantonal border, for example into the Linth plain, just as carefully as moves within the valley.
Since 1 January 2011 there have only been three unified municipalities, as decided at the Landsgemeinde (open-air cantonal assembly) of 7 May 2006. The canton has no districts. Economically, Glarus was one of the first and the most heavily industrialised regions of Switzerland, and industry remains its main sector to this day. For businesses, our removals company in Glarus handles:
Hydropower and tourism are also important, especially in Braunwald, Elm and Filzbach. The official language is German; 83.6 per cent of residents speak German and 6.8 per cent Italian, and the Glarus dialects belong to Highest Alemannic.
Who applies for the parking space when I move from Näfels to Netstal?
We do, and twice over: Näfels belongs to Glarus Nord, Netstal to the municipality of Glarus. We therefore submit one application each to the relevant municipality for the moving-out and moving-in address and set both for the same date. The two municipalities each invoice their fees directly to you.
How do you get furniture into a holiday flat in Braunwald, Elm or Filzbach?
By a route we check in advance for exactly that address. The three resorts are not on the main axis of the valley, so at the survey we look at how close the vehicle can get to the house and how far items need to be carried. Our carpenters assemble furniture brought up from the lowlands directly in the holiday flat.
How do you relocate a business from an older factory building in Glarus?
After a walk-through in which we record gates, stairs, goods lift and carrying routes in the building. Glarus is one of the earliest industrial regions in Switzerland, so the buildings vary widely. We move offices, IT and files outside working hours, and our carpenters set up the furniture again at the new site.
Where does the removal lorry park for a flat near the Zaunplatz in Glarus town?
In a parking space that we request from the municipality of Glarus as close as possible to your front door. Around the Zaunplatz, where the Landsgemeinde meets, we choose a moving day that does not clash with an event. If the distance from the lorry to the front door gets longer, we include an extra person for carrying.
When is furniture storage worth it if the house in Schwanden is not yet free?
As soon as moving out and moving in do not fall on the same day. On moving-out day we load straight into our dry, climate-controlled and alarm-protected storage facility and deliver on the agreed date to Schwanden or further up the valley. Each address is visited only once, and assembly only happens in your new home.
How much does it cost to move a piano to the Sernftal or up to Braunwald?
From CHF 250.–, plus working time for the journey and access to the house, which we estimate at the survey. Tell us about the instrument early so that enough carriers and protective blankets are planned for a village in the Sernftal or for Braunwald, and the amount is already in the quote.
What steps are involved when moving from Bilten across the border to St. Gallen?
Little changes for the transport, but two authorities are involved administratively: we apply for the parking space in Bilten at Glarus Nord, and for the one at your destination at the responsible St. Gallen municipality. You deregister in Glarus Nord and register at your new place of residence yourself; the customer portal lists both with dates.
What is the minimum booking for a small move within Glarus Nord?
Three hours, after which we bill in quarter-hour increments. This also applies if only a few pieces of furniture move, say from Niederurnen to Mollis. If you also have items from the cellar or attic, it is best to put them on the same appointment so that the booked time is fully used.
In the Glarnerland, your position in the valley determines the effort: a move on the broad valley floor in Glarus Nord runs differently from one in the villages of the Sernftal or on the Kerenzerberg.
West of the Linth the canton extends to Bilten; the terrain here is flat and belongs to Glarus Nord, the most populous municipality. On moving day, the parking space is therefore the main issue rather than the gradient of the access road.
The Sernftal, or Kleintal, is the only side valley in Glarus with villages. If you are moving to Elm or another village in this valley, allow for a longer journey; we check the road width before choosing the vehicle.
The Kerenzerberg is also part of the canton of Glarus. For addresses on the mountain we clarify access, turning options and carrying distance in advance and decide whether a smaller vehicle or a furniture lift makes things easier.
A cantonal office for parking spaces for removals is not documented in the sources. We therefore apply for the parking reservation at the responsible office of your municipality, i.e. Glarus Nord, Glarus or Glarus Süd; the authority invoices the fee.
Furniture that is not coming to your new home is disposed of properly for CHF 65.– per m³. If you prefer to take small quantities away yourself, ask your municipality's collection point which materials it accepts.
Industry is still the main economic sector in the Glarnerland, above all textiles, mechanical and apparatus engineering, wood processing and building materials. We relocate businesses outside working hours and move files and records as an archive relocation.
Here you will find every municipality with its population, area and the particulars for your move.
